PEREZ QUIROS, GABRIEL
He is a prominent economist with an impressive academic and professional background. He studied economics at the University of Murcia, completed postgraduate studies at CEMFI, and obtained his PhD from the University of California, San Diego, in 1996. His work experience includes roles as a consultant for the World Bank, economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, at the European Central Bank, and advisor to the Economic Office of the Spanish Prime Minister under Rodríguez Zapatero. Gabriel currently serves as an economist in the Research Department of the Bank of Spain and is a professor at the University of Alicante.
Gabriel has made significant contributions in the field of macroeconomics and econometrics. In an influential article published in the American Economic Review in 2000, he identified a structural change in US economic cycles since the mid-1980s, a phenomenon known as the ‘Great Moderation’. Another of his works, in collaboration with Allan Timmerman and published in the Journal of Finance, examines how the economic cycle asymmetrically impacts companies according to their size. Gabriel has published more than 20 articles in prestigious economics journals worldwide, contributing valuable insights and analysis in his field of expertise.
